P4 enjoy finding out about life at school in the past.

2nd Oct 2025
P4 have had great fun finding out about what school was like for boys and girls over 100 years ago. In class they have been reading books, watching videos and interviewing grandparents. They have used quills, ink pens and slate pencils. P4 have been keen to read some old reading books too, the Janet and John books. It has been fun playing some old fashioned games in the playground too. Last Thursday was very exciting for P4, this was the day everyone got dressed up in their “old school in the past” clothes. They went to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum to experience a day at school 100 years ago. First P4 experienced how children got ready for school by visiting an old cottage. They got their penny to pay for their lesson and a lump of turf before they walked to the water pump to get a bucket of water. Once they reached the classroom, P4 chanted out their tables before they practised their writing with the ink pens. After a busy day in the classroom, it was lunch time. Everyone had an “olden day” lunch to eat. Then it was playtime. It was such fun, playing with the old wooden hoops, marbles, wooden stilts and skipping ropes. We also had some time to visit the Blacksmith who was working and the Doctor too, he even took time to see us! P4 had an amazing school trip. Today the boys and girls interviewed Mrs Mark and Mrs Forsythe who used to teach in Ballydown. They told us lots of interesting things about their school days.
